Paper Plate Snowman

An easy craft for young children.

economy type paper plate
black contruction paper
orange construction paper
red glitter
bottle of glue
scissors.
buttons for eyes (optional, use construction paper if children are under 3 to avoid choking)

To make set up of this project easy make one template and have each mom trace and cut out their child's hat (Children 4+ should be able to cut their own with blunt scissors) if there are several moms you might want to make an extra template for the carrot nose and hat.

Children can glue on the eyes, nose, and paper hat.

Use a glue bottle to draw the mouth. Children can sprinkle the glitter onto the mouth, by placing it into a shirt box first you will have less mess and you can gather the overflow of glitter to place back into the bottle.

Gingerbread Characters

Have precut shapes for kids to decorate such as a gingerbread man or woman, different color glue tubes, wiggly eyes, button nose, etc...

Salt Dough Ornaments

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup warm tap water

Mix the flour and salt together and then gradually add in the water. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until really smooth and elastic-like. If the dough seems a little too sticky add a little extra flour. You will then need to let the dough sit for about 30 minutes, the best way to keep it from drying out is to put it in a bowl with plastic wrap over it.

You can begin making your ornaments the same way you would make cookie cut outs. Roll the dough about 1/3 inch thick and cut into shapes using cookie cutters. Use a straw for making a hole to tie a ribbon through.

Bake at 250 for approx. 1 1/2 - 2 hours. You can tell they are ready when they look uniform in color after the moisture is gone, you can flip over if the top starts to brown before the bottom is done.

Once your ornaments have baked and cooled use acrylic paints to decorate them. Coat your ornaments with either varnish or polyurethane spray if you want to preserve them.
