Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips

1.FIRE PRECAUTION
Check to see that your costume, wig, beard, prop or mask is flame-resistant or fire-retardant. Teach your child the "stop-drop & roll" technique for extinguishing fire from their clothing.

2.VISIBILITY
Assure that all wigs, costumes, masks, etc. fit properly and that there is no obstruction of sight, movement or breathing.

3.CANDY
Children should not eat any treats before coming home. Check candy thoroughly before eating. Discard all fruit and unwrapped candy. It is not worth the risk, even though these treats may be perfectly safe.

4.CROSSING STREETS
Cross streets at intersections and lights, and at the proper time. Teach children not to enter the street from between parked cars and to always look both ways.

5.DARKNESS
Children should carry flashlights when they go trick-or-treating to help them see more easily and to make it easier for motorists to see them. Dark costumes should be trimmed with reflective tape so they will reflect in the beam of a car's headlights.

6.PLAY GUNS
Avoid real looking guns. It is illegal for stores to sell toy guns that resemble the real thing. Toy guns must have an orange strip running down the side of it and must be topped with an orange cap.

7.TOY WEAPONS
Softer is better. Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be made of soft, flexible material.

8.SUPERVISION
Young children should always go trick-or-treating with an adult or in a group. If out with a group, children should carry change or a cell phone to make a call if there is a problem.

9.DOOR TO DOOR TRICK-0R-TREATING
Accept treats only at the doorway. Never go inside a house. Stick to your own neighborhood and only approach homes of people you know and those that are well lit. A glowing jack-o-lantern or other Halloween decorations are good welcome signs.

10.PETS
If you have a pet in your house and are handing out Halloween treats, keep it away from the front door, so as not to scare the little trick-or-treaters or your pet. Should you take a dog with you while trick-or-treating, make sure that it is on a leash and restrained (far away from the front door) while you are receiving your candy.

Halloween Punch
Use a rubber glove to make an ice mold. Use lime flavored punch or another green beverage to pour into the glove, tie, and freeze. When the glove is frozen take the ice out by using scissors.

Place the ice hand into orange colored punch for a glowing effect.
