I remember going to sleep over parties and having loads of fun, but all children are not ready at the same time to feel comfortable about sleeping away from home. For an alternative to a sleep over have a pajama party where the guests can go home at bed time or leave it as an option on your invitation.
Invitation
Make invitations to look like little pillow cases out of material and slip a card inside with all the statistics about the party, put a little batting or bubble wrap to puff it up. For a sleeping bag invite you can make the invite long like a sleeping bag and slip a little paper doll that you can make out of construction paper and write the info on a little paper nightgown.

Decorations
Balloons and Streamers. For a Celestial party you can make moon and star cut outs and hang them from the ceiling in the sleeping area. Throw lots of pillows around the room where the guests will be hanging out.
Food
Usually when kids have sleep over parties they are old enough to help plan their own menu, but a fun idea would be to have the guests to make their own pizzas, you can use English muffins and spaghetti sauce. Have different toppings out such as olives, mushrooms, pepperoni, green pepper, and Mozzarella cheese.
You can also keep up with the 'make your own menu' and build Ice cream sundaes instead of Cake and Ice Cream and save the Cake for the actual Birthday date with family. If you want cake then you can make cupcakes.
Have snacks out such as popcorn and snack-size candy bars for later in the evening.
In the morning serve Birthday Pancakes!! You can sing happy birthday once again, or if you aren't in the mood to cook have a Continental Breakfast set up with orange juice, milk, hot chocolate, donuts, muffins, Danishes and different kinds of cereals.
Games
Let the birthday kid decide to play games or not, sometimes just giggling with friends is fun enough.

Bingo
You can purchase a bingo game in a toy store or at Oriental Trading Company, Inc.
Sleeping Bag Game
Have one person leave the room and all the other guest switch sleeping bags and hide inside. The person who leaves comes back and tries to guess who's in the bags by feeling the sleeping bags.
Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt is fun for an overnight party. Split the guests in 1/2 and have an adult go with each team. Make sure you go to only houses of people you know, you might want to let your neighbors know ahead of time what you will be doing later that night. Try to do it early enough so you won't wake up anyone. Some of the things you could include on your list could be; tooth pick, expired coupon, a rubber band, comic section from the newspaper, trash bag twist tie, a brown paper bag, a paper clip, etc.
Board Games
Have some group board games set out in the party room like Junior Pictionary for younger kids or any other game where several guests can play.
Movie Trivia
If you will be showing a movie preview it before you show it and make up some trivia questions about the movie. Such as who said certain lines, "What color was the stars shirt in a certain scene?" "What was the characters last name?"
